For indie authors – audiobooks are a must! They offer an additional income stream within a global market that has experienced year-on-year growth for the last decade. You have creative control of your work … so why not make the most of it?
And what about traditionally published authors? If your publisher has arranged audiobook production – great! But if not, never fear – audiobooks are still an option. Whether your rights have reverted and you want to revive your back catalogue, or you want to nudge your publisher into action, this course will show you how.
Learn all this and more in an online, self-paced course with audiobook producer and narrator, Sarah Bacaller.
Audiobook expert Sarah Bacaller on what you'll learn in this course
Did you know … audiobooks have experienced 10 years of year-on-year double digit sales growth in the last decade? The market is booming, but Aussie authors are lagging behind, partly because we don’t have access to the distribution pathways of our global counterparts. In the US or UK, an author can jump onto the Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX), find a narrator and send a finished audiobook to Audible/Amazon – all at the click of the button. But in Australia? No such luck. ACX isn’t available to us. So how can Australian authors get their work onto Audible and other global audiobook platforms?
This course will show you how. You’ll learn where to go to have your audiobook produced and how much it will cost (hint: payment options are much more flexible than you think!). You’ll discover how to work with a narrator and what they’ll need from you as the author. And you’ll be equipped to pursue a range of distribution options for your audiobook, whether you want it available exclusively on Amazon, or on a wide range of platforms (including in libraries).
You’ll also understand what’s involved in the narration and production process, and develop fluency in audiobook production lingo – which is essential to good communication with narrators, producers and distributors.
Whether you’re an indie author, or a traditionally published author looking to revitalise past titles, this course is jam-packed with insights and activities to develop your know-how. You’ll hear from authors, narrators and other industry insiders, as well as being equipped with must-have resources for navigating the audiobook production world.
“Highly recommended to anyone who is looking to publish their book and open another source of revenue through audiobooks.”
Lily Fields
This is one of AWC’s 35+ “self-paced” online courses. But what does that mean? Allow us to explain:
“This course exceeded my expectations with lots of practical and useful information. It has clarified the business model on how audiobooks are created and distributed and has had a profound impact on my writing.”
Julie Randolph-Davis
Q: I am an indie author. Will this course help me?
A: Absolutely. As an indie author, you have creative control over your work, and audiobook production is an excellent option to consider as an additional income stream. This course will show you where to go and how to go about having your work published on the audiobook market.
Q: I want to become (or already am) a traditionally published author. Why should I do this course? Won’t my publisher be responsible for audiobook production?
A: They might! For best-sellers and high-profile authors, well-resourced traditional publishers may indeed organise audiobook production, or they may sell the rights to audiobook production houses who bid for them. However, in many cases, audiobook production does not occur. It is therefore possible for traditionally published authors to pursue audiobook production once audio rights revert back to them from the publisher, or even to negotiate with their publishers regarding audiobook production. Audiobooks are also a great way for authors to reinvigorate their back-catalogue.
Q: If I do this course, will I learn how to get my book onto Audible?
A: Yes. Some audiobooks are distributed exclusively through Audible, while others are distributed ‘widely’ to many audiobook sales platforms. There are pros and cons to both distribution arrangements. So, not only will you learn how to get your audiobook onto Audible through this course, but you’ll be able to decide on the best distribution arrangement for your title/s.
Q: Is it expensive to have an audiobook produced and distributed?
A: Not necessarily. There are a range of payment options available to authors who decide to have their audiobooks produced in Australia. These include royalty share, per finished hour, hybrid royalty share deals and more. Much comes down to the narrator you choose, and the degree of risk they are willing to share with you.
Q: Do audiobooks make a lot of money?
A: Audiobook royalty returns can be quite lucrative for successful authors; however, like anything, sales are not guaranteed. Authors should undertake their own cost-benefit analyses and should seek out professional financial advice in weighing up risks and benefits of investment into audiobook production. That said, audiobooks can be an effective long-term source of incremental income.
